In Singapore’s fast-moving retail landscape, even familiar brands can quietly reshape their presence. One such example is Daiso, a household name known for its affordable everyday products, which is now closing another store—its second within just four months.

This development is not just about one outlet shutting its doors. It reflects a broader pattern unfolding across different neighbourhoods, raising questions about how retail spaces are evolving and what it means for the communities around them.

A Longstanding Store Comes to an End

The latest closure involves the Daiso outlet at Sembawang Shopping Centre, which is set to cease operations on April 6, 2026.

This store is not a recent addition. It first opened in 2008 and has been part of the neighbourhood for 18 years. Over time, it evolved alongside changing retail trends, including an expansion in 2021 to introduce the “Threeppy” concept—offering more design-focused and lifestyle-oriented products.

For many residents in the northern part of Singapore, this outlet has been a familiar stop for daily essentials, small household finds, and affordable lifestyle items.

A Pattern of Closures Within Months

This closure does not stand alone.

Earlier in January 2026, Daiso closed its outlet at 100 AM, located in the Central Business District. Before that, another outlet at Kinex had already shut down in July 2025.

Within less than a year, multiple locations across different parts of Singapore—central, east, and north—have been affected.

These closures span:

  • A city-centre mall (Tanjong Pagar)
  • An eastern suburban mall (Tanjong Katong)
  • A northern neighbourhood mall (Sembawang)

This spread shows that the changes are not limited to a single type of location or demographic area.

What Remains Unsaid

Despite the pattern, Daiso Singapore has not disclosed the reasons behind these closures.

There is no official explanation tied to:

  • Rental costs
  • Business performance

What is clear, however, is that the company continues to operate 33 stores across Singapore as of March 26, 2026. The closures are therefore happening within an ongoing presence, not as part of a full market exit.

The Daiso Model in Singapore

Daiso has long been associated with affordability and accessibility.

The brand is known for:

  • A base price point of SGD2 for many items
  • Products that can go up to SGD20 for more specialized goods
  • A wide range of categories including housewares, toys, stationery, decorations, and gifts

This combination made it a convenient destination for everyday needs, especially for quick purchases and impulse buys.

Over time, however, the pricing model has expanded beyond a single flat price, reflecting changes in product variety and retail strategy.

A Shift Across Neighbourhoods

From a neighbourhood perspective, each closure represents more than just a retail change.

In places like Sembawang, a long-running store becomes part of daily routines—whether it’s picking up small essentials, browsing after meals, or visiting as part of a weekend mall trip.

Each closure becomes a point of change within the neighbourhood’s story.

    The Bigger Picture

The sequence of closures highlights an important reality: retail in Singapore is constantly evolving.

Brands adjust, locations shift, and spaces transform. What remains constant is the role these places play in daily life—serving as small but meaningful touchpoints within each neighbourhood.

The recent Daiso closures are not defined by a single explanation. Instead, they form part of a broader pattern of adjustment within Singapore’s retail environment.

With multiple outlets closing across different regions, yet dozens still operating, the story is not about disappearance—but about reshaping.

And as each location changes, so does the neighbourhood around it.
